Strengthening capacities of Border Police officers on public health alerts

12 August 2014

t3Starting from today, Border Police staff, especially those operating in Border Crossing Points (BCP) are participating in a specialized course on Ebola virus. The inspectors of the Chisinau International Airport BCP were the first to be informed on the consequences, main risks, and protection and prevention measures.

Each employee has been informed on a set of measures intended to prevent and detect such alerts in BCPs. During the course, the useful information on Ebola symptoms was complemented by the measures undertaken at Chisinau International Airport BCP:
- enhancing capacities on risk detection and response through a local action plan on maintaining public health and quick response to public health emergencies of international concern in the Airport(action plan signed between airport agencies of the Border Police, Customs Service, National Centre for Public Health, medical unit, Ground Handling Companies);
- upgrading the early warning and reaction to prevent and control major hazards to public health caused by biological, chemical, radiological agents, accidents and natural disasters;
- ensuring information exchange via daily alerts provided to Border Police officers during briefings, including consultation with the National Centre for Public Health on implementing the International Sanitary Regulation;
- providing access in the Airport to equipment and personnel for transportation of ill passengers to the medical service.

Adequate training is the main element for preventing the above-mentioned phenomenon. The training on Ebola virus is appropriate due to the fact that the Border Police officers are the first at risk of contact with potentially affected persons from African countries. The training was chaired by the chief doctor of the Border Police Department, who will provide further training on public health alerts to all Border Police subdivisions.
