State border of the Republic of Moldova represents the natural or conventional line marking the external boundaries of the territory over which the Republic of Moldova exerts exclusive sovereignty on land, water, underground and air sectors. It is the line between border signs or between coordination points where the state border is not marked with border signs. On rivers and other streams, state border is established by means of international treaties concluded by the Republic of Moldova with neighbouring states, complying with the principle of international law according to which the state border passes through the middle of the main fairway, and on not navigable streams – through the middle of the nappe.
The total length of the state border of the Republic of Moldova is 1906 km, out of which 955 km on land, and 951 km on water.
The countries that border the Republic of Moldova are Romania to the West, and Ukraine to the East.
